Nine PM in downtown Shirahama, a passing train vibrates the surrounding buildings, one of which contains an empty room with polished wooden floors where a row of white-robed people stand in wait. Someone yells “SEIZA!” and they all kneel side by side. Here in this place an overweight business man, a college drop-out, a mother of two, a ten-year-old painting prodigy, a deaf girl, a silent foreigner, and a strapping teenage boy all sit side by side. They gather here night after night to learn “karate-do,” the way of life that sustains them. Their teacher is Shimabukuro sensei, an ancient man who now turns to face them and lowers his head to the ground. Now the resting is over, as they all rise and take their stances, their blood begins to pump quickly. For the path they follow is called karate-do, and the lives they lead are ones of training.

Shizentai is not a story about super heroes, it is the story of us all, and how the weak may prevail.
